The NMR glossary provides brief definitions and explanations of terms and jargon used on our site.

Screening

Testing all or representative sample of the herd for one or more diseases

Somatic Cell Count (SCC)

an indicator of milk quality of. Somatic cells are body cells, including leucocytes (white blood cells). The number of somatic cells increases in response to pus-producing bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, a cause of mastitis

STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS (Staph. aureus)

High Staph. aureus commonly found in herds with high somatic cell count, and indicate additional attention to hygiene needed during milking process to prevent spread of infection

STREPTOCOCCUS UBERIS (Strep. uberis)

associated with somatic cell count or bactoscan problems. High levels of Strep. uberis may be due to carrier cows with sub-clinical infection of missed cases of mastitis due to poor detection methods

STREPTOCOCCUS AGALACTIAE

Highly contagious pathogen that can cause increased bulk milk cell count and high or fluctuating bactoscans

STREPTOCOCCUS DYSGALACTIAE

associated with poor teat skin, possibly due to problems with milking machine or poor quality teat dips. High levels of staphylococci / Staph. aureus may also be present as both are associated with poor teat skin condition
